Going Green on the Greens

Spring 2011

Harmony Golf Preserve lies in the heart of an 11,000-acre residential development, the Town of Harmony. This community was consciously designed to offer beauty and amenities, in balance with nature.

The golf course was intentionally designed as a fully protected environmental wildlife preserve. By wrapping the Golf Preserve around existing wetlands, U.S. Open Champion Johnny Miller created a stunning combination of art and nature. It's a championship layout that preserves acres of broad meadows, towering stands of southern pines and two shimmering 500-acre natural lakes. Environmental stewardship is a cornerstone of the development philosophy at Harmony and the Golf Preserve is no exception.

As a Troon Golf-managed facility, this site offers one of the finest golfing experiences in Florida, rated 4.5 stars by Golf Digest and named a Top 50 Public Course in 2010 by GolfWorld Reader’s Choice Awards in 2010. Besides being Central Florida's only Johnny Miller signature design, Harmony is a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, incorporating existing wetlands and wildlife into design and management practices.

It sits on a 260-acre wildlife preserve full of native birds and other wildlife. There are no houses on the the golf course so you're surrounded by a park view and a quiet, pleasant nature full of ponds and more than 4,000 trees planted throughout the course and adjacent neighborhoods. In fact, there are more trees today than pre-development.

The Harmony Golf Preserve stretches more than 7,400 yards from the championship tees and the holes feature wide fairways, loads of bunkers and greens complex contours. The ponds within the Golf Preserve were built for storm water treatment for the towns' roads and also support a variety of beautiful native birds.

Most of Harmony’s ponds have alligators in them as they are also an important part of the nature system. Pond plants such as the blue-flowered Pickerelweed & white Sagittaria provide great cover and food and wildlife. The bushy cord grass, cabbage palms and pines at the seventh hole recall the habitat of the Kissimmee Prairie, native to central Florida.

Something else that might catch your eye is the bat house on hole 8 that rises up on 2 poles left of the 250 yard mark. It houses up to 500 bats that come out each night to feast on mosquitoes and other insects, limiting the need for pesticides on the property.

In addition to the design and layout, the grounds crew is also an integral part of the environmental story at Harmony. A natural approach to grounds maintenance, deep and infrequent watering philosophies and an agronomic environmental center allow for the optimum use of recycling materials, as well as safe storage of fertilizers & chemical use and workplace and environmental safety.

Harmony Golf Preserve does not spare amenities. Guests can take advantage of a complete practice facility, featuring a driving range, putting green and chipping area, while a magnificent 18,000-square-foot clubhouse offers a professional shop, men's and ladies' locker rooms, Town Tavern with HD sports, billiards, and arcade, and a large banquet facility. A professional staff caters to guests, upholding Harmony's standards of quality.
